You may have received care from non-physician health professionals (NPP). Generally, NPPs provide primary care. Each state has different rules, but it is common for NPPs to practice under a medical doctor. The NPP is also referred to as a Primary Care Provider (PCP), but this term may refer to both MDs and Advanced Practice Nurses (APRN). The APRN can care for patients in many of the areas in which physicians practice, but they do not have an MD or a DO degree. They include physician assistant, nurse practitioner, and certified nurse midwives. The Affordable Care Act specifically promoted the use of NPP/APRN as a cost effective addition to MDs. Most importantly, patient care quality outcomes are the same.
